The sound quality of all CD players and DAC's is directly affected by the clock quality. A jittery clock degrades the sonic performance of your CD player too. Most if not all clocks implemented in commercial CD players show rather disappointing jitter performance, as they are designed by digital engineers, and implemented the wrong way around.

Substituting the standard clock with a new clock oscillator, designed with low jitter in mind, will greatly enhance the sound quality. In average, the jitter performance can be improved by a factor 100 or more, by changing the original clock with an XO. In my own Marantz CD94 it also made the read function speed up and now allows inserting and playing a CD in just one operation (before i would get a read error).

The Clock comes with descriptive general mounting instructions which can be applied to your CDP. You need to be able to find your way around the inside of your CDP and identify main components. the present clock speed and do a little soldering. Although simple to install (my CD94 took 1/2 hr) this is for the more experienced DIY 'r.

Options
  • XO1, a separate module, intended for the experienced hobbyist.
  • XO2 = XO1 + low noise supply, sitting on a neat PCB. Just connect power supply and change a few components inside the player yourself.
  • XO3 = XO2 + reclock circuit. Equal to XO2, but extended with an SPDIF reclocking circuit. This greatly enhances sound if the CD player is used as a drive for your external DAC.
  • XO-DAC. A low jitter clock upgrade for audio DACs.

Tentlabs shunt regulators are designed to upgrade power supplies of both analog and digital circuits, mostly found in CD/DVD players, DACs and similar audio equipment. Substituting, or adding these regulators enhances the sound quality in terms of transparency and resolution, at reasonable price. Connections in general are easilly made. This type of upgrade requires little knowledge of electronics hence is accessible for every enthousiastic audiophile DIY.

Ultra Low Noise DIYHFS current source filament supply. 2.5A, 2.5v-12vdc output (depending on heatsinking) Output noise ~4mv (typical 300b filament, varies by current draw). Input/Output short circuit protected, overheat protected, output voltage continuously variable with on-board trimmer pot. Through-pcb vent-holes for cooling of critical parts. Also, can be mounted flat profile without heatsink by mounting regulator from the bottom and bolting regulator direct to chassis. Application notes and discussion here. Includes mounting standoffs and 4 pcs 0.47r resistors to trim input voltage. Function indicator LED on board. Best quality parts: Nichicon, Schottky etc.

TentLabs Directly Heated Tubes Supply

Despite their massive linearity, Directly Heated Tubes (DHTs) have one major disadvantage. Their heater is part of the signal flow, i.e. is included in the audio path, hence the heater supply is affecting the sound.

TentLabs now introduces a novel heater module, based on traditional techniques, but with some major advantages over existing solutions. Read further!

Purpose

TentLabs heater supply is designed to heat DHT's the cleanest way possible, without affecting the music currents generated inside the tubes' heater. The supplies generate a very low noise output, while maintaining its' high output impedance. Result areas are:
Bigger soundstage
Better focus
Cleaner tone
Better resolution

Existing current supplies lack true high output impedance and need adjustment during use. This new module is truly different in many areas - read on !

Technology

TentLabs has investigated to effect of the heater supply in Directly Heated Tubes. For detailed information and a rationale for the use of current heating, see the presentation on heater supplies for DHTs.

An overview of the TentLabs supply is shown below:

The current source maintains the high output impedance (typically > 10kOhm), whereas the voltage control takes away the need to trim the output voltage after instalment, or during use. The accurate reference guarantees long term stability, and contributes to a clean output current. The module exactly supplies that amount of heater current, until the required DC voltage is achieved, e.g. 5V for a 300b.

The rectifying bridge consists of low noise Schottky Barier diodes and Electrolytic capacitors (a total of about 20.000uF) with a well chosen amount of ESR, to dampen and reduce the current peaks - all contributes to low noise output !

Application

A typical example is shown below:

Each tube needs its own heater supply, fed by a separate winding from the power transformer. The whole supply then is floating, and only has one connection to ground, as shown above. This example above shows the DHT in fixed bias mode. When using cathode bias, the grounded leg has to be connected to the top of the cathode resistor.

These are the only connections, so no caps, no hum-bucking pot, no nada!

The total output current is limited to some 2,5A to 5A, depending on the version, so slow start-up is the result. Especially when the tube is cold, this is a nice feature. Cold tubes, when heated with traditional supplies, draw currents up to ten times their nominal current. Using TentLabs heater supply will gently switch on your tubes.

Only at installation, the supply needs minor DC adjustment, to compensate for any voltage losses in the wiring (some 100 mV are easily lost at these current ratings). During use, no adjustments are needed anymore, not even after changing the tubes !
