Customer's Comments for LD+ "Today the Ladyday arrived in perfect order at my home in XXXX and I directly connected it to my speakers and CD player. The sound is already a big improvement (very detailed, non-sharp music) over my Marantz transistor amplifier, and the Ladydays are not yet burned in ! To my surprise they can also drive my self build low sensitive speakers (4 Ohm, 84 dB/m/watt) very well with good controlled bass.Thank you for your very good service and I will highly recommend all my friends, who are looking for a tube amplifier, DIY hifi supply. After a while I will also need a good pre-amplifier and I will surely look at your Basie." "The amps are starting to burn-in and the sound is the BEST I've ever heard! Very holigraphic. I was listening to 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' (Pink Floyd), and it sound quadraphonic. The system images like crazy! I've only owned push-pull 2 way systems (Quicksilver Audio). This is my first SET set-up. These amps are blowing me away. I've been in Hi Fi since 1973, so I have a very trained ear. This system with the 'Ladies', is by far the most open, real, soundstage i've ever heard! Thank you for a fine design & build!" "Ok, comparing the LD91 to the previous, there is actually no comparison. Your new amps sounded way better. They are lively sounding whereas the old ones sounded dull on your setup. Remember the cd 'Friday Night in San Francisco'. Wow, the speed, details , and the lifelike presentation is enough to win me over. It is one of the best or maybe it the best sounding amps I have heard, some more i don't believe it is coming from a 300b amps. One thing I feel is that the midrange bloom or should i say richness have not yet fully develop yet and as mention in the manual, the amorphous OPT need time to run in. So there is a lot of potential for your amps when it is fully run in. Maybe the next time I meet you I can hear them again" "...the ladyday amps received - looks and plays beautiful, no problems whatsoever, thanks a lot!" "Amps have about 5 hours on them now and sound very impressive, the last SET I had was a XXXXXXXX, very nice but too much hummmmm, about 2mV at speaker. The 91s at speaker are both 0.7 mV. I live in the country, and nights are VERY quiet so 2mV through 97dbm speakers in a smallish room drove me nuts. Sold the XXXXXXX to a friend who is very happy with them. The 91 has more "Guts", Vocals come from the lungs not the mouth. Detail is quite stunning, probably because of the low noise floor." "We did last month a listening comparison of different tube amps on a pair of Klipsh La Scala speakers and I "won" the contest with my pair of Billies which was the cheapest amp of all that were tested!" |

NEW! The LD Signature rises to new heights. Output transformers: Used in some extreme high end amplifiers, these are wound 'perfect lay' using paper and cores from Japan. 'Perfect lay' winding allows for tighter packing of layers and less interwinding capacitance so that a larger core can be used without sacrificing high frequencies. The larger core is desirable to prevent saturation of signal at high power levels and during transients. Bass plays deeper but at full rated power. Multiple (5) taps on the secondary provide adjustable primary impedance from 2K to 8K so the following power tubes can be used: VT52/10Y/205D/45/50/PX4/PX25/2A3/300B. The power transformer comes with all the voltage taps necessary for the advanced DIY'r to build the above: 2.5v/5v/7.5v-3a power tube filament taps, 400/300/ B+ supply and 2 x 25V buck/boost windings to zone in on the B+ desired. 5V/4a taps for rectifier, 6.3v and 10v - 1a for the driver tube heater supply. Driver tube comes with mounting hardware for 4/6/8/9 pins tubes . In addition, Tentlabs new filament supplies can also be accomodated. Driver tubes can be 6SL7, 6SN7, WE310A and related types, 6H30, 6C45pi, 417 etc. 30w Wirewound adjustable cathode resistor for the power tube is standard as is the choke for power supply and genuine Nichicon power supply caps. Copper ground plane standard. So... the skys the limit here. The LD Signature+ allows many possibilities to explore popular SET configurations such as WE91, MU, SRPP etc.
This is an 'EZ kit'. Difficulty rating Easy - Difficult epending on options.

The LD Signature Why? The last year has seen price increases in core and chassis materials from 50-150%. The steel chassis we were using increased so much that there was much less difference in cost compared to a high end non-magnetic chassis. We could either drop down to thinner gauge chassis with its resonance problems (only a little cheaper), or move up to the highend. Transformer cores presented the same choice. We had been using a mix of new and surplus transformer iron which gave good performance for the cost. However surplus iron is not as widely available as before and is still bettered by larger core grain oriented laminations especially when wound perfect lay. Power transformers: we've used torroids in the past for their low noise and good performance for the cost. But the gap between a good EI and torroid has narrowed significantly in the last year. We now use 'perfect lay' EI cores. The core material is the highest grade - H14 from Japan. Why is the core so important in a power transformer? Higher grade = less saturation = fewer windings needed = lower impedance = less power supply sag during transients and faster recovery. With careful orientation and layout, the LD continues to set the standard - 0.55mv with simple SRPP and diode bridge feeding the filaments of the power tube (drops to 0.45mv with the CCS parallel 6SL7 driver and even lower with the DIYHFS filament supply). Something about having your cake and eating.... The new chassis is non-magnetic with a copper ground plane. It is deeper giving more room for our beloved oil caps and big chokes if desired. Non-magnetic: ever breadboard a circuit - sounds great, but stick it in a steel chassis and the magic is gone? The LD Sig non-magnetic chassis removes the magnetic interference effects of a steel chassis in the audio band. The new output transformer is a major step up. Layers are separated with special paper from Japan and only the best core material used. Dynamics - wow! The power supply uses genuine Panasonic caps. Fit and finish is much improved. 4 higher quality speaker binding posts are used. The basic tube sockets are improved ceramic but not the generic Chinese type which can lose contact with tube pins. The LD Signature is improved in every way and offers even more flexibility as an experimenter's platform. Prices are a little higher but you can see a major increase in quality. There is no getting around higher costs for parts for iron-hungry tube amps and all manufacturers face the same choices. Beware the proliferation of tube amps which cut corners in the areas you can't see, with fake caps, re-sleeved used caps, scrap iron cores and low purity copper -all common practises-, and sell for unbelievably low prices. A relationship with one of those quickly turns to disenchantment. Note re 4/8/16ohm speaker taps: Why? It is needed. Really. Nominal impedance ratings are often misleading. An 8 ohm rated speaker may be 6 or 12 ohms and often sounds better on 4 or 16 ohm taps. Always try different taps to determine which gives best sound. When the right tap is selected, soundstage will be bigger and sounds more energetic. Also 16 ohm taps allow using vintage high efficiency speakers. Connecting them to 8 ohms is a compromise. |
