Crecendo and Crescendo Grande -- Our Speaker System

HiEff.jpg

We’ve been enjoying the coherence of the Feastrex field coils for some time. But the laws of physics eventually catch up with a 5” driver even though the Feastrex does push those limits to their…ah, limit, and we find ourselves wanting the less limited dynamics and greater sensitivity of horns.

Unfortunately horns with any bandwidth are the size of a refrigerator.
So…we have developed a horn ribbon based system which achieves our goals.(please keep in mind the picture shown is for testing and development only)

The wide band horn ribbon covers from about 600hz to 23khz. The special carbon fiber 10” covers below that, 1st order. System sensitivity is an honest 98db/w, nominally 8 ohms. The box is about 30L (the finished one will have a narrower baffle than shown so will be quite domestic) and will cover from about 60hz to 23khz in room which will be acceptable for many. How does it sound?

The dynamics from this combo are pretty scary at times. Since the ribbon is horn loaded, wideband and closed on the back (doesn’t need nor use the box) it gives open-baffle levels of transparency and immediacy, and the coherence of a full-range.

So, a stand mount, 30L cabinet which goes 65-23khz at 98db/w – 8ohms and… very SET friendly. Name: Crescendo

There is an option for bass modules – the Crescendo Grande. We wanted a cabinet that could slip under the Crescendos and take the place of the stand. For this a really beefy, quick bass driver with a small VAS was needed, which happens to be exactly what the Dynafone is. The cabinet is about 50L and tuned to cover down to 25hz flat.

Also needed was lots of power to drive the bass modules. Fortuitously, we just received the new Reckhorn A1000 which gives us about 500w in a small footprint. This bass system – 2 x A1000 and 2 x Dynafone and cabinets has no problem keeping up with the Crescendo horn ribbons while at the same time giving up really clean earthquake tones in our 1700s/f shop.

We will sell these as a kit minus the cabinets. I’m trying to find a source for some plywood (our company policy is to hate mdf) knock down cabinets but so far nothing affordable has shown as available.

Will keep you posted.
